Most if not all doors can benefit from having door stops installed, and it seems there is no one type that works in all situations.
There is the type that go on the baseboard, types that mount to the door, types that mount to the floor, types that mount to the wall as a bumper for the door handle, and hinge-type stops.
The type that mount on the wall can damage the lock-set of the door, so they are not recommended.
My least favorite type of door stops are the hinge-type door stops.
When you think about the mechanics of how hinge-type door stops work you can understand the problem. Think of a swinging door as a lever being used to pry a rock out of the ground. By placing a fulcrum as close to the rock as possible it is possible to exert tremendous force on the rock when pushing down on the end of the pry bar. In the case of a door, the width of the door is the pry bar, the fulcrum is the hinge stop and the rock is the hinge screws and/or the hinge itself.
In time, something has to give. As you can see in this picture, the screws have completely pulled out.
The wider the door, and the cheaper the door, the more likely damage will be done. As you can see in this picture, a previous door stop actually punched through the face of the hollow core door.
Of course a good quality door might be heavier creating even more force than the cheaper door, so that would be no guarantee of long term success either.
Sometimes it is just not possible to install stops on the wall–for example a door that swings against a bathtub. Perhaps in these cases a stop on the door itself might be a better option. Sometimes installation of floor stops will accomplish the job but if installed in the path of getting in and out of the tub might not be appreciated by bare feet.
And that gets us to something related to all kinds of door stops: none of them deal with anger very well.
So perhaps it is not the doors fault at all. Someone better tell kids and the wind.
